Fela Anikulapo Kuti, commonly known as Fela, was a Nigerian musician, composer, and political activist who is considered the pioneer of the music genre known as Afrobeat. Born in 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Fela blended traditional Nigerian music with elements of jazz, funk, and highlife to create a unique and powerful sound that became the voice of a generation. Fela’s music was not just about entertainment; it was a means of social and political commentary. He fearlessly addressed issues of corruption, government oppression, and social injustice in his lyrics, often criticizing the Nigerian government and advocating for the rights of the common people.
